The $100K Challenge launched with a bang – 2,047 animals' lives were saved over Kick-off Weekend, June 1-2. The 49 contestant shelters broke record after record – many of them reported the most adoptions ever in a single day or weekend! Take a look at some ways these agencies shattered their own records:

Breakers: With 69 lives saved, Cheyenne Animal Shelter more than doubled their previous record of 32 adoptions in a single weekend.
Saving More Lives Begins
At exactly 12:01 AM Saturday, June 1, 2013 the 49 2013 shelter contestants in the $100K Challenge will begin their quests to save more lives this summer over last. At stake: $600,000 in prize grants for the shelters that increase lives saved the most – and, more importantly, tens of thousands of lives. “Every year competing shelters smash their prior adoption records, but judging from the preparations we’ve seen so far, this year shelters will far exceed the amazing accomplishments of past Challengers,” says Bert Troughton, VP of ASPCA Community Outreach. BARCS, Division 5, Withdraws from Challenge
BARCS (Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, Baltimore, MD) has temporarily suspended canine intake and withdrawn from the 2013 Challenge in order to focus their attention and resources on eliminating a respiratory infection effecting dogs in the shelter. This will enable the veterinarians and staff to treat and care for currently ill animals, and ensure that the infection is not transmitted to any dogs not currently in the shelter.
